  • a: 2nd spine thick, long, to tail fin base
Dorsal rays VIII + I,10 (rarely 9 or 11); anal rays III,6 (rarely 7); pectoral rays 14-16 (usually 15); total rakers (including rudiments) on first gill arch 26-31 (usually 27-30); lateral-line scales 47-55 (usually 50-54); scales around tail base 18-22 (usually 19-21); 5-5.5 scales between lateral line and second dorsal fin; second anal spine very stout, much longer than third, reaching to or beyond level of tail fin base when depressed and clearly exceeding longest anal soft ray.

Overall silvery with clear lateral line; a dark base at base of pectoral fin; anal and pelvic fins yellow.

Size: reaches at least 35 cm.

Inhabits bays, estuaries, and lower parts of freshwater streams.

Depth: 0-25 m.

SW and central eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador.

Closely related to C. ensiferus from the western Atlantic.

Body elongate and somewhat compressed; dorsal profile slightly concave above the eyes; lateral line extending to posterior edge of caudal fin; second anal spine, when folded down, reaching or surpassing origin of caudal fin; pectoral and pelvic fins sub-equal; first gill arch with 26 to 31 gill rakers; back blue gray; belly white; lateral line pale; membranes between dorsal spines and between second and third anal spines pale (Ref. 55763 ).
