Overview
Main identification features
  • brown + yellow bar, dark scale edges
  • juvenile: brown + blue spots
Dorsal rays XIII, 17; anal rays II, 13; pectoral rays 20-23; body scales with small accessory scales; lateral-line scales 19-21; gill rakers on first arch 20-21; body oblong, greatest body depth 1.8-2.0 in standard length; bone below eye fused cheek, it and propercle with smooth edges.

Brown, with darker scale margins; an incomplete yellow bar on middle of side; juveniles dark brown with blue streak or spot on most scales, blue spots and lines on head, and narrow blue margins on most fins.

Size: attains a maximum length of 30 cm.

Inhabits rocky shores.

Depth: 1-10 m.

Galapagos Islands and Malpelo, Ecuador to northern Chile.
