Dorsal rays X,14; third dorsal spine greatly elevated, about three times longer than second; anal rays III,7; pectoral rays 16-17; midlateral scale rows about 96; body depth 2.6 in standard length.

Light brown on upper two-thirds, white below; about 6-10 large white spots on upper half of side, and smaller, irregular dark brown spots in surrounding areas, sometimes a whitish line from upper corner of operculum to middle of base of tail fin; tail fin white basally with dark brown bar across middle portion and broad yellowish rear margin.

Size: grows to at least 52 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs and nearby sand patches.

Depth: 10-75 m.

Galapagos Islands.
