Body moderately elongate (depth ~35% of standard length), slightly compressed; snout blunt; mouth large, extends almost to middle of eye; eye large (~25% head length); opercle thin, with 2 flat spines; preopercle margin with fine teeth; 1 dorsal fin, VII-VIII low, strong spines, middle spines highest, origin behind pectoral base, 26-27 rays; anal III, 17-19, spines short, origin under ~mid dorsal; pectoral long, pointed, reaches anus; pelvic much smaller than pectoral, inserted behind base of pectoral, connected by membrane to belly, can fold into groove on belly; tail forked; scales small, smooth, easily shed; head scaleless.

(Preserved fish) Brown to dark blue, sometimes silvery; fins with black margin; iris gold.

Size: 65 cm.

Habitat: coastal and near coastal pelagic, sometimes commensal with jellyfishes.

Depth: 0-500 m.

Temperate SE Pacific; Peru and Ecuador, the Galapagos and Malpelo.
