FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features head: narrow and pointed, central groove wide, shallow mouth small, round; very thick lips Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 18; pectoral rays I,10-11; total gill rakers on first arch 11-13; body robust; mouth narrow ( 2.4- 3.1 in head), rounded; lips thick; head shield coarsely granular; head narrow, pointed; dorsomedian groove shallow and tapered posteriorly; palate teeth in four patches, but the inner patches may be joined to the larger outer ones, thus appearing as only two large, somewhat triangular patches, separated at midline; adipose fin base about same length as dorsal fin base. Grey to bronzy greenish on back and upper sides, whitish below; fins dusky. Size: reaches at least 35 cm. Habitat: common in the mouths of rivers. Depth: 0-60 m. El Salvador to Panama.
