Head moderately depressed; eyes small (3-6% of standard length); no tentacles over eye; filaments on snout and between eyes; 2 spines on upper opercle; 2 spines below and behind opercular spines; teeth pointed; scales on head extend well forwards, to canals on rear of head; body covered with small imbedded scales; 48-67 pores on upper lateral line, 44-62 pores on lower line; dorsal rays III,26-28; anal 23-25 rays; pectoral 21-23 rays.
Body medium dark, 4-5 wide dark bars on upper back and side, another encircling tail base; dorsal dark, with broad oblique darker bands; head pale with dark blotches over top and sides; throat pale; tail with 4 dark bars, thinnest 2 in center, pale margin; anal pale with dark margin; pectoral pale with dark bars on base and margin and 2 rows dark spots in between; pelvic pale with dark tip.
Size: 35 cm.
Habitat: soft bottoms, river mouths and bays.
Depth: 15-75 m.
Southern Mexico to Costa Rica.
