Robust, blunt snout; mouth terminal; lateral line continuous, bent over origin of anal fin, rear section consisting of 18-21 short, 2-pored tubes; no large canines at rear of lower jaw; gill openings wide, membranes not fused to throat; one branched cirrus over eye, 2 clusters of nape cirri; dorsal fin XI-XIII, 16-18, without notch between spinous and soft parts; anal II, 18-20; pelvic I, 4.

Upper body and head dark mottled brown, lower half mottled yellowish brown; dark blotch on upper operculum; dark eye-sized spot behind eye; eye cirrus brown with red tip; dorsal brown with narrow red margin; tail - rays purplish brown, membranes yellowish; anal - yellow brown inner half, dark brown outer half; pelvic tan; pectoral base and rays brown, membranes yellowish.

Size: 27 cm.

Habitat: rocky shores.

Depth: 0-10 m.


Panama to Chile; probably only as a vagrant in our region.
