Overview
Main identification features
  • dark spots + ~7 irregular bars
  • dorsal fin and a: row of grey blotches, white borders
  • tail: black blotch, white border
Dorsal rays 85-98; anal rays 72-82; scales in longitudinal series 86- 105.

Generally tan with dark brown spotting on ocular side of head and body; 7-8 brown cross bars; dorsal and anal fins with indistinct dark rectilinear bars at rear and narrow white outer margin; tip of tail black, with white margin; inner opercular linings of both sides of body darkly pigmented; lining of gut cavity unpigmented.

Size: grows to at least 16.4 cm.

Inhabits flat sand bottoms.

Depth: 1-150 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Colombia.
