Dorsal rays XII,12; anal rays III,7-8, second spine much large than third; lateral-line scales 50; 5-6 scales above lateral line; body depth 2.8-3.4 in standard length; preopercle strongly serrate, including 1-2 enlarged spines at angle, serrae on lower margin directed forward; length of snout < diameter of eye.

Brownish on back, silvery blue-grey on sides, and white below; 6-7 blackish bars on upper side usually evident; soft dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins yellow.

Size: grows to about 30 cm.

Frequents trawling grounds, occasionally encountered in fish markets.

Depth: 5-72 m.

Southern California to the eastern Gulf of California to Peru.
