Overview
Main identification features
  • elongated, oval
  • d: front grey, white and black
  • pectoral not to anal fin origin
Body an elongate oval; dorsal rays IX,10; anal rays III,7; lateral-line scales 44- 48; margin of bone under eye and of preopercle smooth; body depth 2.4- 2.5 in standard length; pectoral fins not reaching to origin of anal fin.

Overall silvery white; spiny dorsal fin with grey base, white center, wide black tip.

Size: reaches at least 21 cm.

Inhabits sand and mud bottoms of bays and estuaries; also venture as much as 20 Km up rivers.

Depth: 0-30 m?.

California to the Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Galapagos and Cocos.
