Body strongly compressed, in an elongate oval (height 34-41% of standard length), deepening with growth; upper head profile almost straight; border of preopercle smooth; 7-9 (usually 8) rakers on first gill arch; mouth strongly extendible, ends under front edge of eye; dorsal IX,10; anal III,7-9, 2nd spine thinck, shorter than 3rd, shorter than snout; pectoral pointed, reaches beyond line through anus, ~35% of standard length; 43-45 scales on lateral line; lateral line curved on rear 2 of body.

Body plain silver in adult, silver on side, brown above and yellow below in juvenile; black blotch on body wall inside upper corner of operculum; spiny dorsal shades from grey base to black margin; anal fin membrane usually dusky; rear 2-1/3 of pelvic fin dusky in adults; small fish with 3-10 narrow bars on upper sides.

Size: 24 cm.

Habitat: schools on soft bottoms in shallow bays; juveniles in coastal lagoons and estuaries.

Depth: 0-100 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
