Ridge just before eye; top jaw covered with scales; beak long; body slender; 45-55 rakers on first gill arch; bases of dorsal and anal without scales; dorsal 15-16 rays; anal 16-18 rays; pelvics small, inserted nearer operculum than tail fin; pectorals short.

Silvery, back with brown dots on scale edges; 3 narrow black lines along middle of back; flank - grey stripe with black upper margin; beak black; tail and front rays of dorsal and anal dusky; fins otherwise pale.

Size: 19 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: surface, 0-5 m?.

El Salvador to Peru, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
