Overview
Main identification features
  • body and fins: green or brown + dense white dots
Dorsal and anal fins developed as skin-covered ridges, but relatively tall and distinct; rear nostril not tubular, at most a raised rim; dorsal fin origin on top of head, well in front of gill opening; teeth of jaws canine-like; 1 row teeth on sides of upper jaw, three longitudinal rows of teeth at front of upper jaw.

Dark brown to greenish-brown, with peppering of numerous small white spots.

Size: to 170 cm.

Habitat: rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-70 m.

Lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California to Ecuador and the Revillagigedos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
