Dorsal rays IV + I, 7; anal rays III, 9 (10 in juvenile); fatty tissue covering most of eye; rear of upper lip relatively thick, covering rear of lower lip; teeth with 1 point; mouth small, rear end of upper jaw reaching level of front of eye; pectoral fin not reaching level of origin of first dorsal fin; scales small, 45-47 in lateral series; second dorsal and anal completely scaled.

Bluish on back, silvery on sides, and white below; faint darkish stripes on side corresponding with scale rows; a dusky bar across base of pectoral fin.

Size: reaches at least 60 cm.

Habitat: shallow bays and mangroves.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

The SE Gulf of California to Peru and the Galapagos.

Occur in shallow waters, most commonly in areas of mangrove development and shallow embayments. Often seen scraping algae from lava rocks or browsing on filamentous algae (Ref. 28023 ). Oviparous, eggs are pelagic and non-adhesive (Ref. 205 ). More data needed. Probably caught incidentally with other mullets.
