Overview
Main identification features
  • initial phase : eye ~6 radiating blue lines
  • initial phase : tan + ~5 pale bars
  • terminal phase : blue-green
  • cheek: lowest scale row - 1 scale
  • pectoral 14 (12 branched)
Dorsal rays IX,10; anal rays III, 9; pectoral rays 14, 12 branched; median predorsal scales 6; 3 rows of scales on cheek, upper 2 rows with 5-6 (usually 6) scales, lower row 0-2 (usually 1) scales; adults with slight hump on forehead; body relatively deep and compressed; tail fin straight to slightly concave in adults.

Initial phase: brownish head and front half of the body, with a blue-green tint on the rear half of the body; darker brown lines radiate from eye; several vertical rows of grey spots forming diffuse bars on flank; terminal male: mainly green with orange-brown scale outlines, snout green, with green irregular spoke-like bands radiating from eye. Juvenile as with initial phase, but lacking blue-green tint to rear of body.

Size: grows to at least 60 cm.

Habitat: occurs on rock or coral reefs.

Depth: 3-25 m.

The central Gulf of California to Ecuador and the Galapagos.

Generally the least abundant and most wary of the eastern Pacific parrotfishes; but common in the SE Gulf of California.
