Dorsal rays X + I, 28-30; anal rays II, 6; pored lateral-line scales 45-49; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 19-21, total 26-31; mouth strongly oblique, ends before center of eye, lower jaw projecting; eye 4.2-4.8 in head length; 2 minute pores on tip of chin, no barbel; teeth small, in 1-2 rows; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins and beyond level of anus; second anal spine strong, slightly shorter than first soft ray; tail margin a short blunt point, longer point in young; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath on basal one-third.

Color silver, greyish on upper back; axil of pectoral fin blackish; pectoral, pelvic, anal, and tail fins frequently yellow.

Maximum size 28 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-25 m.

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.
