Elongate, fusiform, compressed, oval cross-section; head low, long (~35% of standard length), pointed; eye large (25-33% of head length); mouth a little oblique, reaches to middle of pupil; front of top jaws with a pair of large pointed canines; no barbels under chin; preopercle smooth in adult (with 2 spines in juvenile); 14 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal low, with long base, deep notch, 2 parts distinctly separate, X-XI, 18-21; anal II,8-10, small, length of base ~snout length; pectorals long, reach past pelvics, pointed, 16-17 rays; tail bluntly angular to rounded, central rays longest; lateral line arched at front; scales rough on rear 3/4 body, smooth in front and head, 49-59 on lateral line, 5-7 scales between lateral line and dorsal origin, inner ½ of membranes of soft dorsal and anal fins scaled.

Dark above, silver below; sides with undulating dark lines along scale rows; roof of mouth and gill chamber black, latter visible through side of gill covers; inner base of pectoral black.

Size: 27 cm.

Habitat: offshore, continental shelf, on bottom and midwater.

Depth: 100-815 m.

The SW and SE Gulf of California to Costa Rica.
