Dorsal rays X + I, 26-28; anal rays II, 8; pectoral rays 19-20; pored lateral-line scales 48-50; snout bulbous; mouth moderately oblique; no barbels on chin; eye 4.9-5.3 in head length; margin of preopercle with about 15-17 fine serrae, those at angle not greatly enlarged; margin of tail S-shaped, the upper lobe pointed; pectoral fins relatively long, usually reaching slightly past tips of depressed pelvic fins; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath.
Color dusky grey with silvery reflections; prominent oblique blackish stripes following scale rows on body; fins dusky brown to blackish.
Size: to at least 35 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters.
Depth: 1-20 m.
Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.
