Dorsal rays X or XI+II or III,18-22; anal rays II, 11-12 (rarely 10), spines not reaching to end of base of fin; pectoral rays 17-19; pored lateral-line scales 47- 51; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12-14, total 17-21; snout blunt, projecting slightly beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, nearly horizontal; lower jaw or chin without barbels; eye 4.1-5.0 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw enlarged; margin of preopercle with 9-12 spines or serrae; pelvic fins with filamentous tips; tail margin with short blunt central point.

Color silvery, bluish grey on upper back; dorsal fin dusky; caudal fin dusky with yellow tinge; pectorals, pelvics, and anal yellowish.

Size: grows to at least 25 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

SE Gulf of Californian to Peru.
