Dorsal rays usually XI + 11, first spine short, second spine larger; anal rays 11; pored lateral- line scales 48-52; rostral plate prolonged, forming divergent lobes on each side of snout tip; preopercular crest with 2 rear spines; breast and belly entirely scaleless; pectoral fins relatively short, 23-34 percent of standard length.
Mottled brown or reddish with faint brown bars on sides; 1-2 dark spots at middle of first dorsal fin; tail orange, with dark blotch on lower half.
Size: reaches at least 15 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms near reefs.
Depth: 30-200 m.
Southern Baja California and the central western and southeastern Gulf of California to Peru.
