Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Ross Robertson, 2006 · 12 Prionotus albirostris 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features mouth short; lips -pale blotches 1st dorsal fin : 1st spine serrated tail fin dark + pale center bar preopercular crest: serrated pectoral long, lower 1/2 black, upper 1/2 spotted Dorsal rays X, XII, first spine with serrated front edge; anal rays 11; lateral-line scales 50-55; of bony ridge under eye serrated at rear; no transverse groove across top of head behind eyes; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching below last few dorsal rays; mouth short, rear margin of jaw not reaching level of front of eye; about 5-6 well developed gill rakers on lower limb of first arch. Grey brown with darker mottling, white on underside; two pale blotches on lips at side; dorsal fins somewhat dusky with brown mottling or spotting, outer edge of spiny dorsal with blackish spots; tail fin blackish with a pale central bar, and a pale outer margin; pectoral fins black on lower half, with black spotting at base and upper half. Size: attains about 20 cm. Inhabits sand-mud trawling grounds. Depth: 20-100 m. Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, and Malpelo. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=32; Southern limit=-7; Western limit=-115; Eastern limit=-78; Latitudinal range=39; Longitudinal range=37. Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.
