Overview
Main identification features
  • lip folds: upper less than lowerspiracles smallnostrils short
  • dorsal fin and tail fin edges not fibrous

Elongate, slender body; eyes horizontal ovals, with ventral nictitating membranes; width between eyes = 4.3-4.9% of total length; snout pointed; mouth large, angular; teeth molariform and asymmetrical, with 1 small blunt point; nostril length 53-74% of distance between nostrils; spiracle length 0.3-0.8% of total length; upper lip fold notably shorter than lower lip fold; 5 gill slits, last 2 over pectoral fin base; 2 large dorsal fins, second slightly smaller than first; first dorsal with concave rear edge, middle of its base closer to pectoral base than pelvic base; dorsal fins with denticled rear edges; distance between dorsal fins = 18-22% of total length; origin of second dorsal fin well before origin of anal fin; anal fin smaller than and with origin under second dorsal; tail strongly asymmetrical, lower lobe expanded, with strongly concave rear edge; skin denticles on flank are pointed ovals with a single point, and canals along 2/3 of length.

Southern California to Ecuador, and Malpelo.
