Overview
Main identification features
  • elongate; forehead profile horizontal
  • purple and red + 3 yellow stripes
Dorsal rays VIII,12; anal rays III,8; pectoral rays 15; rakers on first gill arch (including rudiments) 17; pored lateral-line scales elongate (46-47; greatest body depth 4.1 in standard length); forehead profile horizontal; top jaw bone with point at lower rear end; tail base deep (>1/2 body depth); tail concave.

Head and belly pinkish purple, fading to reddish below; a dark brown midlateral stripe with yellow stripe above and below, also a red to brownish stripe below base of dorsal fin with narrow yellow stripe above.

Size: to 26.5 cm.

Inhabits rocky and coral reefs.

Depth: 25-250 m.

Central Gulf of California to Peru, Clipperton, Cocos and the Galapagos.
