Overview
Main identification features
  • 1st dorsal fin : no filament
  • top barbel reaches pelvic
  • pectoral: long filament
Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 25-30; pectoral rays I,12-13; gill rakers on first arch 5-7 + 12-14; none on posterior face of first arch; body very robust; lips absent except at corner of mouth; only two pairs of barbels; top barbel broad, ribbon-like, reaching as far as pelvic fins; head shield with ridges, but without granules; palate teeth in four patches, but fused to form narrow, continuous band; pectoral spine with long flattened filament reaching origin of anal fin; dorsal spine without filament; lateral line divides in two at tail base.

Dark blue on back with brassy sheen, silvery on sides, and white below; fins dusky to pale.

Size: attains 57 cm.

Habitat: commonly caught by trawlers in coastal waters.

Depth: 0-177 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to northern Peru, and the Galapagos.
