  • mouth ends before eye;lips not thick
Dorsal rays VII-X (usually IX),24-27; anal rays II, 22-26; pectoral rays 19; pored lateral-line scales 99-115; body depth as percent of standard length 23-28 (mean 25); snout profile generally less abrupt than in C. affinis; tail fin deeply concave in adults.

Generally light bluish grey; tail fin yellowish.

Size: reaches 102 cm.

Inhabits rock and sand bottoms.

Depth: 3-150 m.

British Columbia to the lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to central Peru, including all the oceanic islands except Clipperton.
