Dorsal rays X + I, 24-30; anal rays II, 7 (rarely 6), 2nd spine strong, 1/2 length of 1st ray; pectoral rays 16-19; pored lateral-line scales 51-54; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 10-14, total 15-22; snout blunt, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, more or less horizontal; tip of chin with a single, thick barbel; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle very finely serrate; second anal spine stout, 2.2-2.7 in head length; tail margin straight to slightly concave.

Color bright silvery, bluish above; sides with oblique, undulating brown or olive lines following scale rows; fins yellow; inner side of gill cover blackish.

Size: attains 55.6 cm.

Inhabits coastal areas, including sandy bays and harbours.

Depth: 1-45 m.

Point Conception, California to the NE Gulf of California.
