Splitnose searobin
Dorsal rays X-XI/11 (rarely 10) first spine tallest, about half of head length; anal rays 10; pored lateral-line scales 35-40; snout plates prolonged, forming a "scalloped" shovel-shaped extension on each side of snout tip; preopercular crest with 2 rear spines; breast and belly with small scales; a strong spine projecting laterally from cheek bone; usually 3-4 small, barely detectable, spines at rear of spinous dorsal; pectoral fins relatively short, 24-39 percent of standard length.
Generally mottled reddish brown with largely blackish or dark brown pectoral fins; a prominent ocellus between fourth and fifth dorsal spines.
Size: reaches at least 12.5 cm.
Inhabits sand-mud bottoms of trawling grounds.
Depth: 17-200 m.
The tip of Baja to the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
