Eyes on left side; elongate; head length <30% of standard length; bony ridge over lower eye; mouth medium length (upper jaw 31-44% of head length), ends under lower eye; teeth ~equally developed on both sides of jaws, in 1 series on each jaw, no canines; base of eye-side pelvic on midline of body; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; eye-side lateral line ~straight, from edge of opercle to tail base; gill rakers long, slender, 17-19 on lower arm of 1st arch; 80-88 dorsal rays; 67-70 anal rays; pectoral long, ~75% of head length; lateral line 44-50 scales.

Eye-side brown, body and fins mottled with dark brown, with a few bluish spots; blind-side uniform pale.

Size: 22 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 20-350 m.

California to Baja and to the upper Gulf of California.
