Body elongate; back narrow; head low, broad, blunt; mouth under snout, almost horizontal; chin and lower jaw with 12-15 pairs of slender barbels along side; top lip notched; preopercle finely serrated; 20-25 small rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal with deep notch separating spiny and soft parts, XI,25-27; anal II,8-9; pectoral narrow, pointed, 17-18 rays; tail S shaped; scales rough except smooth around eye and on fins, 53-57 lateral line scales, inner quarter of soft dorsal and anal scaly.

Body and head pale grey with coppery reflections, lighter below; 7-8 faint dark bars on upper 2/3 of body and tail base; fins pale, pelvics and anal darker; inside gill chamber dark.

Size: 45 cm.

Habitat: shallow sandy coasts and bays.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

Panamá to Peru.
