Overview
Main identification features
  • ~10 dark saddles, belly - stripe
  • d: iii (low) + xvii-xx
  • dorsal fin and c: spotted
Dorsal rays III + XVII-XX, 16-19; segmented anal rays 30-32 (usually 31); pectoral rays 12-14 (usually 13); total lateral- line scales 64-73; scales in straight (posterior) part of lateral line 9-13; lateral line deflected ventrally below dorsal fin elements 27-32; principal segmented caudal rays 10; isolated dorsal finlet on nape composed of 3 spines.

Overall whitish with ~10-11 blackish to brown mottled saddles and bars across back and on upper half of sides; dorsal + tail fins spotted.

Size: reaches 3.5 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 1-15 m.

Mexico (Islas Tres Marias and Nayarit) to Panama.
