Overview
Main identification features
  • flank - central stripe
  • lower body ~6 brown lines
  • pectoral and belly yellow
  • pectoral base - no dark spot
Dorsal rays XX or XXI, 9-11 (usually XX, 10); anal rays II, 18-20 (usually 19); pectoral rays 14; lateral-line scales 50- 55; no scales on midline in front of dorsal fin or on prepectoral area, sometimes a few scales on breast; jaws with single row of large conical teeth; roof of mouth with teeth at front but not sides; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape.


Generally pale; often with a dark greenish stripe from eye to tail fin base, about6 greenish-brown lines along on side; belly and pectoral fins often yellowish.

Closely related to M. hubbsi, but usually lacks dark spot at pelvic-fin base and is much smaller.

Size: attains a length of 6.5 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 1-10 m?.

The tip of Baja California, the SW Gulf of California, and central to southern Mexico.
