Overview
Main identification features
  • grey; flank: row 8-10 dark spots
  • white dots: head, body and c
  • 1st dorsal fin : male long spine
  • no head barbels
Dorsal rays VII + I, 10 (rarely 9 or 11) first 2 dorsal spines of males typically prolonged; anal rays I, 9 (rarely 8 or 10); pectoral rays 18-21 (usually 19-20); pelvic disc present; scales of middle of side extending forward from caudal fin base to pectoral fin axil, dorsally the scales extending forward to level between base of 4th-6th dorsal spines; preopercular pores 3; mandibular papilla rows parallel.

Brown to grey with small white spots on cheek, operculum, and body and tail fin; a series of diffuse white bars (sometimes fragmented) on side of body; diagnostic markings include 8-10 small blackish spots along middle of side and blackish patch just behind cheek; dorsal fins and especially caudal fin with small white spots.

Size: grows to 7.5 cm.

Habitat: common on sand bottoms of tide pools and rocky reefs

Depth: to 10 m.

Gulf of California, except in the north.
