Dorsal rays VI + I, 12, spines filamentous, two fins separate; anal rays I, 12-13; scales small (50-73 mid-side), rough; head scaleless; pelvic disc present; tail fin much longer than head, with sharp central point; teeth conical; head pores extending to above posterior end of operculum; a vertical row of papillae posteriorly on operculum; teeth on >1 row on top jaw.
Light tan with a silvery sheen on opercle and, chest and belly; irregular brown saddles on back; flank with a row of dark blotches separated by dark spots; dorsal and caudal fins with rows of spots forming stripes and bars, respectively.
Size: to 13 cm.
Inhabits estuaries and brackish mangrove creeks.
Depth: 0-5 m.
SW and eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador.
