Dorsal rays VII + I, 13-14 (usually 14), 5th dorsal spine forms a short filament in both sexes; anal rays I, 13-14; pectoral rays 20-23 (usually 22-23); pelvic disc present; midlateral scales about 35; scales smooth, except for a patch of rough scales on flank behind base of pectoral fin; head, nape, breast, belly, and pectoral fin base scaleless; tail fin with long central point, ~45% of standard length; a low fleshy nape crest in both sexes.
Pale tannish brown with whitish belly, often a silvery sheen on opercle and side of body; head with fine dark streaks and dots; sometimes a hint of 3-4 diffuse whitish bars on upper side; fins silvery; in male both dorsal fins with an orange stripe along the base, second dorsal with an orange stripe along the outer edge, tail with an orange stripe along its upper border.
Maximum size, to 7.5 cm.
Habitat: common in the Gulf of Panama on mud and broken shell bottoms.
Depth: 3-36 m.
The northern and eastern Gulf of California to Panama.
