Overview
Main identification features
  • front nostril: small flap
  • green + dark and light reticulations
  • 4-5 hourglass bars
  • blotch above pectoral;
Body relatively slender, elongate, head relatively slender; a small fleshy swelling at pectoral base; front nostril with small (usually less than nostril diameter) skin flap; 4 pairs of upper & 3 pairs of lower 3-pointed incisors, followed by usually 1 large canine on top jaw, & 1-2 on lower jaw; operculum attaches to body opposite top of pectoral base; a small flap at front nostril; anus closer to anal fin origin than sucker; pectoral 19-20 rays; sucker with 5-7 rows of papillae at front, no papillae in center, 6-8 rows of papillae across rear section; dorsal 6-8 rays; anal 6-7 rays; tail 8-9 rays.

Top greenish; lower surface very pale, sometimes with dark cross-bars between anal and tail fins; back with dark wiggly lines, some in hour-glass shapes across body; a large black spot on flank above pectoral base; fins dark grey, with pale bar across middle of tail fin.

Size: 7.5 cm.

Habitat: rocky, wave-swept areas.

Depth: 0-12 m.

Gulf of California to central Mexico.
