Elongate, shallow to moderately deep body; dorsal rays III, 41-48 (usually 43-47); anal rays III, 35-44 (usually 38); pectoral rays 19-23, usually 21; pelvic fins absent; tail fin strongly forked; 23-26 gill rakers on first arch; snout longer than eye diameter; dorsal fin slightly raised at front, highest at about 5th ray; anal also higher at front but its height <1/2 that of dorsal; high point of dorsal and anal fin is angular, with only slightly elongated rays; 30-31 vertebrae.

Irridescent blue-green above, silvery belowwhite to bluish on back.

Size: attains 36cm.

Inhabits sand bottoms of exposed coasts.

Depth: 9-91 m.

British Columbia to southern Baja and the west and northeast of the Gulf of California.
