Axelrod's reef-bass
Robust, compressed body; head bluntly rounded profile; upper edge of eye with short, broad-based flap; mouth slightly oblique, reaches past rear of eye; dense band of simple teeth on each jaw; preoperculum with thick spine at upper angel, no serrations; gill opening restricted above by fusion of operculum to body, a flap extending back from upper operculum to beyond pectoral base; 15 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal VII(rarely VI),21-22, spines low, fin base long, end of soft part rounded; anal III,17-18, long base, end of soft part rounded; pectoral 17-18 rays, rounded; pelvic I,5, inserted under pectoral base; lateral line in 2 parts, with 35-36 & 18-23 scales on front and rear sections; scales smooth on head & front body, grading into rough posteriorly; inner 1/2s of dorsal, anal & pectoral covered with scales.
Brown overall, tan below; side of body with numerous large pale brown blotches; a large, prominent ocellated dark blotch on upper operculum; 2 dark lines run back and from lower half of eye across cheek; dorsal, tail, anal, and pelvic fins dark; pectorals translucent brown; juvenile uniformly brown body, tan head, diagonal white bar across cheek, vertical white bar under eye
