Snout short, blunt, rounded, slightly overhanging mouth; mouth large, oblique, reaching well past eye; teeth small, simple in bands on jaws, in a U shaped patch at front roof of mouth, in bands on sides of roof of mouth, in two patches on base of gill arches behind tongue; operculum with a rounded spine at upper rear; preoperculum with 2 small spines; gill rakers long and slender, 20 (plus 5 rudiments) on first gill arch; tail fin joined to dorsal and anal fins but tail rays extended well to rear, with straight rear margin; pelvic fins inserted under preoperculum, each consisting of a pair of long rays that extend well past the anus; pectorals long and narrow; scales small (~100 longitudinal rows), smooth, well overlapping, entirely covering body and head; lateral line high, follows dorsal profile, ends at ~ last 15% of tail.

Upper 2/3 of head and body pale silvery brown finely speckled with black, shading to silvery white below; dorsal and anal fins - bases pale, outer 3/4 blackish, with narrow white margin; tail blackish, with white rear margin; pectorals and pelvics white; inside mouth white at front, black at rear and in gill cavity.

Size: reaches 15 cm.

Habitat: on sand and mud bottoms.

Depth: 85-310 m.

The SW and NE Gulf of California to Colombia.
