Head broad, snout blunt; heavily branched cirri on nape; top jawbone exposed at side; roof of mouth with no teeth on sides but a row of large teeth at front; dorsal XVII, 11, spines not elongated; anal II, 18; pectoral 14 rays; lateral line scales 67-68; large patch of scales on cheek, entire upper margin of operculum scaly; inner 1/3 of tail & pectoral fins scaly, patch of scales on membrane between each dorsal & anal ray; in lateral line at rear each scale covers the front pore of the scale behind it.
Head spotted above, mottled below, with faint double bar from eye to corner of preopercle; body with 4 distinct dark bars, with 5 less distinct bars between, before & after them; dorsal fin with ocellus between 2nd & 3rd spines, spines behind with extensions of body bars, soft fin with rows of spots angled down and back; anal with same pattern as soft dorsal; tail with cross-hatched pattern of spots; pectoral & pelvics dusky, with dark bar on pectoral base; body, head & fins uniformly brick red in male.
Size: 13 cm.
Habitat: shallow and rocky.
Depth: 1-10 m?.
