Overview
Main identification features
  • dorsal fin anal fin and rear body red
  • 1st dorsal fin v-vi, base - black spot
  • tail fin base - 2 black spots
Body elongate, compressed; head short, compressed; snout short, very blunt; 1 pore behind eye and 1 on preopercle; mouth small, horizontal, slightly under snout, reaches to ~middle of eye; teeth in 1 row on each jaw, small, with slightly flattened tips; gill opening extends slightly above pectoral base; 1st dorsal V-VI short spines (longer in male), well separated from soft dorsal of 11-12 rays; anal 11-12 rays; pelvics fused in short disc that is not fused to belly; pectoral round, reaches beyond tip of pelvic; tail fin round, ~equal to head length; scales large, over entire body & head except snout and lower jaw, rough at rear of body, smooth elsewhere, 28-30 in lateral series.

Grey-brown, head darker, rear body red-brown; sides with irregular dark blotches forming bars; tail base with 2 dark spots; spiny dorsal with round dark spot at base and longest spines with black tips; soft dorsal red, with black stripes; anal fin red; tail clear of faintly barred.

Size: to 3.6 cm.

Habitat: intertidal on mud bottoms, enter freshwater.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Mexico (Mazatlan) to Colombia.
