Body moderately elongate (depth ~35% of standard length), compressed; snout blunt; mouth large, extends almost to middle of eye; eye large (~25% head length); opercle thin, with 2 flat spines; preopercle margin with 8-13 small spines; 1 dorsal fin, with VI low spines that gradually increase in size to rear, origin over or before pectoral base, 22-23 rays; anal III, 15-16, spines short, weak, origin under rear ½ of dorsal; bases of dorsal & anal fleshy, translucent; pectoral 21 rays, rounded & passing anus in juvenile, shorter & more pointed in adult; pelvic smaller than pectoral, inserted under base of pectoral, connected to belly by membrane, can fold into groove on belly; tail forked; scales small, smooth, easily shed, covering bases of dorsal and anal, 94-98 on lateral line; head & nape scaleless.

Grey with blue reflections, paler below; top of head, snout, lips & inside base of pectoral dark; juvenile pale grey, faint dark lines along sides along scale rows, tip of snout & around eyes pale, & operculum, inner base of pectoral & tips of dorsal, tail, anal & pectoral black.

Size: 96 cm.

Habitat: oceanic, pelagic.

Depth: 80-200 m.

Temperate eastern Pacific; in our region at the Revillagigedos, and at Ecuador and Peru.
