Overview
Main identification features
  • eyes stalked, no papillae; nostrils separated
  • dorsal fin has 21-24 rays
  • c: long, simple rays, notch under tail base
  • top lip: 6-12 flaps
  • 1 row scales over lateral linearch
  • body: 5-6 saddles, 2 stripes;nape - bar
Head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; both lips fringed, those on top lip very short; eyes on short stalks, without papillae; rear nostril near middle of preorbital bone; top lip with 6-12 flaps; dorsal fin origin on nape, with 3-4 free spines at front, X-XII, 21-24; anal II, 25-27; pectoral usually 13 rays; lateral line scales 36-38; 1 row of scales above lateral line arch; notch on underside of end of tail base; tail fin rays unbranched.

Inside mouth unpigmented; eyes in dark mask, with broad T-shaped or triangular pale blotch behind; 4-7 dark saddle along upper back; side with 2 dark stripes; dorsal and anal pale; tail pale, with dark blotch at base.

Size: 3 cm.

Habitat: tide pools and coastal sandy areas.

Depth: 1-15 m.

Mazatlan, Mexico, to Panama.
