Head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; both lips with flaps; eyes on short stalks, without papillae; rear nostril at front edge of preorbital bone; dorsal fin origin on nape, 1st 4 spines separate from fin and without membranes, XI-XIV, 23-27; anal II, 28-32; pectoral usually 13 rays; lateral line scales 42-45; no scales above front part of lateral line; no notch under tail base; dorsal and anal fins joined by membranes to tail base; tail fin short (<12% of standard length) with branched rays.
Color variable: head lightly to heavily mottled with brown; inside mouth pigmented; 9-15 (usually 12) dark bars along upper body that are joined below to form a longitudinal stripe along flank; flank with 2-3 stripes; fins pale or streaked with brown.
Size: 9.3 cm
Habitat: sandy areas around estuaries.
Depth: 1-5 m.
Sinaloa, Mexico, to Panama.
