Body elongate but deep & strongly compressed; head relatively long (23.8-27.6% of SL) and deep (height ~18.7% of SL), with a high profile; snout angular; a sharp spine on opercle that has 1 tip; eye relatively large (2.1-3.1% of SL); upper part of preopercle with a pore; gill rakers 14-17; origin of dorsal fin at level of middle of pectoral fins; pelvic fins inserted below rear part of head; dorsal rays 67-75; anal rays 50-57; origin of anal fin under dorsal rays 20-25; pectoral rays 17-20; pectoral relatively long (usually >14% of SL); tail fin rays 16; body covered with relatively large overlapping scales, about 110 in midlateral series; patch of cheek scales with 8 (6-8) vertical rows of scales; belly with scales; penis curved, with abrupt tapering to thin point; 2 pairs of large pseudoclaspers associated with penis, outer pair broad, expanded at tip, inner pair large, with 2 branches, front one bending forwards, rear one bending backwards.
Preserved fish pale brown, paler below edges of dorsal, anal and tail fins black.
Size: reaches 8.6 cm.
Inhabits shallow reefs.
Depth: 0-33 m.
Known only from the Gulf of California.
