Generally reddish to red-brown with a blue stripe on upper part of body and blackish stripe on side of snout, continued behind eye; tail fin with narrow white margin and mainly blackish central portion containing one or more orange-red spots in center.
Size: reaches maximum size of 7 cm.
Inhabits rock and coral reefs.
Depth: 3-45 m.
Widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Americas; the eastern Pacific distribution of D. excisus excisus extends from southern Baja and the central Gulf of California to Ecuador, including all the offshore islands except the Revillagigedos, where there is an endemic subspecies D. excisus paulus.
