Overview
Main identification features
  • mouth reaches eye
  • dorsal fin and a: long filament
Dorsal rays 18-19; anal rays 8; pectoral rays 16; lateral- line scales 76-84; gill rakers on first arch 5-7 + 10-11; mouth distinctly ventral; a prolonged, filamentous last ray on the dorsal and anal fins (most pronounced on the dorsal fin); rear end of jaw reaches to below eye.

Overall silvery; yellowish wash on pelvic and pectoral fins; tail fin dusky.

Size: reaches 60 cm.

Habitat: found mainly in estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m.

The tip of Baja and the southern Gulf of California to Ecuador; also occurs in the Caribbean Sea.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 19-20; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 8. Last rays of dorsal and anal fin prolonged; upper lobe of caudal fin slightly longer than lower lobe; dusky spot at pectoral base; head region naked; nasal pore margin black; black bands on snout (Ref. 13608 ). Brilliant silver below and dark above (Ref. 37032 ).

Mostly in estuaries, especially those of rivers along mountainous shores (Ref. 7251 ). Found on soft bottoms (Ref. 5217 ).
