Dorsal rays XVII to XIX, 10-12; anal rays II, 17-19; pectoral rays 13-15; lateral-line scales 64-69; 10 or more scales embedded on upper margin of gill cover; cheek scaleless; no enlarged canines behind smaller teeth in jaws; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape; no pronounced indentation at front part of spinous dorsal fin; dorsal fin indented at junction between spinous and soft rays.
Overall greenish brown with about 8 darker bars along side, including diagonal band from snout to first few dorsal spines; numerous small white spots on lower part of head and body.
Maximum size to 17.8 cm.
Habitat: weed covered rocky shores.
Depth: 1-10 m.
Central Baja California to the central Gulf of California to near Acapulco, the Revillagigedos islands. The most common member of the genus at most localities in the Gulf of California.
