Dorsal rays XI-XIII, 21-23 (usually 22) not notched between spinous and soft portions; anal rays II, 22-24 (usually 23); pectoral rays usually 15; bushy tuft of cirri above posterior nostrils; cirrus above eye slender, unbranched; about 5 short cirri on each side of nape; teeth in jaws numerous and movable, a pair of large, curved canines posteriorly on lower jaw; lateral line in two disconnected, overlapping portions with 10 or fewer tubes in the posterior section; gill opening not joined to throat.
Mainly dark brown, often with yellowish bars on head and anterior part of body; a dark brown or blackish spot behind eye, sometimes surrounded by pale area.
Maximum size, 18 cm.
Inhabits shallow rocky reefs exposed to surge.
At depths to about 20 m.
Central Baja to the northern Gulf of California to Peru, and all the oceanic islands.
There are two subspecies of O. steindachneri: O. s. clippertonensis from Clipperton, and O.s. steindachneri from the remainder of the eastern Pacific.

Body cylindrical; head with cirri above the eyes, on the nape, and at the posterior edge of the anterior nostril; maxillary not protrusible; each jaw with one row of incisiform teeth; anal and dorsal fins elongated ; lateral line divided into two, independent, overlapping segments (Ref.

Adults prefer the surge zone of unprotected rocky headlands with steep slopes. They wedge themselves in crevices close to shore in shallow water, darting out to defend their territory. Diurnal feeders that graze on algae and sessile invertebrates, using their comb-like incisor teeth to scrape food (Ref.

). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref.

), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref.
