Overview
Main identification features
  • dark + 4-5 pale bars
  • bone under eye: fused to cheek
  • bone under eye: edge covered by scales
Pacific night-sergeant

Dorsal rays XIII,12-13 (usually 13); anal rays II,10; pectoral rays 18-20; lateral-line scales 19-21; gill rakers on first arch 20-25; greatest body depth 54-59% of standard length; suborbital bone under eye fused to cheek, its lower border completely covered with scales.

Head golden brown; body grey with 4-5 relatively narrow whitish bars; most of body scales with narrow dark outline; narrow blackish bar or wedge-shaped mark on pectoral-fin base; lips whitish.


Maximum size to 19 cm.

Inhabits rocky inshore reefs exposed to wave action.

Depth: 0-5 m.

El Salvador to Peru, including the Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo.
