Overview
Main identification features
  • silver + yellow back + 5 black bars
Dorsal rays XIII, 12-13; anal rays II,10-13; pectoral rays 16-20; lateral-line scales 19-23; gill rakers on first arch 23- 33; greatest body depth 1.6-2.0 in standard length.

Whitish or pale silvery green with 5 black bars on side and additional, less distinct, bar across caudal peduncle; back usually bright yellow. Similar in appearance to the Atlantic A. saxatilis and Indo-W. Pacific A. vaigiensis, but unlike these species the adults (over 70mm standard length) possess a patch of scales on the inner face of the pectoral-fin base.

Size: grows to 23 cm.

Habitat: occurs along rocky shores.

Depth: 0-15 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to central Peru, including all the offshore islands.
